THE LIVINGSTON RIPLEY WATERFOWL CONSERVANCY

East African Crowned Crane

East African Crowned Crane

This species of crane is well recognizable because of a colorful feather crown on the back of its head. It is the only species of crane that perches and occasionally nests in low trees. Unlike the typical brownish colored crane egg, the egg of the East African Crowned Crane is light blue. This crane has developed its own unique hunting methods. It stamps its feet on the ground, startling insects so that they become easy prey. One of only four cranes species that do not migrate.
